ARGOS – Identification of Reactivable Industrial Sites Using Optical-Based Systems
Detecting industrial brownfield sites is particularly important in a densely populated country like Germany. Land is a scarce resource, and climate and environmental protection demand the preservation of remaining green spaces. It is therefore sensible to prioritize the use of existing but currently unused industrial land for future construction projects. However, no comprehensive dataset of such brownfield sites exists in Germany.
The ARGOS project aims to address this gap: Disused industrial areas exhibit certain optical characteristics that distinguish them from active sites in aerial imagery — for example, empty parking lots or overgrown vegetation. These features enable automated detection using artificial intelligence.
